6 Tips for Exercising Pre and Post Partum

  • Running/exercising while pregnant is safe as long as you are cleared by a doctor and can lead to easier births and a quicker recovery post birth.
  • A good rule of thumb to measure intensity of your exercises is you should be able to talk while exercising.
  • It is suggested postnatally to start with walking at 1 month, and slowly progress intensity keeping in mind that you need a high enough caloric intake to support exercise, particularly if you are breastfeeding.
  • Everyone’s body recovers at different rates, and vaginal vs C section birth can greatly impact recovery time and when it is appropriate to return to exercise.
  • If you are having urinary incontinence while you run or exercise it is important to see a pelvic floor physiotherapist. Urine leakage while sneezing/coughing/jumping (Urinary Incontinence) is common but not normal.
  • Additional considerations need to be taken with regards to exercising while breast feeding.
