All About Concussions
Concussions are quite common in sports and even everyday life. It is important to be assessed by a trained health care professional to guide you through your recovery process and your return to play/work protocol.
Did You Know…
- Concussions are a mild traumatic brain injury.
- You do not have to hit your head in order to have a concussion. Concussions actually result from the brain hitting the skull (acceleration/deceleration injury).
- Adults and adolescents recover at different rates from a concussion. Adults are typically within 7-14 days while adolescents can take up to 30 days. 15-20% of individuals with concussions continue to have symptoms months post-injury.
- After a concussion there is an increased energy demand on the brain. This increased energy demand can lead to cognitive difficulties including: attention, reaction time, information processing, and working memory.
- Resting in a dark room for longer than 24-48 hours is not an adequate treatment plan to enable concussion patients to fully recover from their symptoms. It can delay recovery.
- There Is no evidence to show that continued rest improves outcomes in those with persistent symptoms.
- There are conditions that put you at an increased risk of a longer recovery time after a concussion. Some of these include history of migraines, sleep disorders, motion sickness, and mental health disorders.
- Once you have had a concussion you could be at risk of second impact syndrome which is a life-threatening condition.
If you are concerned that you have sustained a concussion, first call your family physician. If your symptoms persist past the ‘normal recovery period’ then reach out to a physiotherapist for further care. A trained physiotherapist can help to guide your recovery process to ensure a safe and effective return to work or play.
